About CBD Melbourne
From major businesses, international events, and professional sporting attractions to fine dining and hot nightspots, Melbourne's Central Business District (CBD) has it all! Melbourne is in the capital state of Victoria and sits on beautiful Port Phillip Bay. The streets are set up in a grid system making it easy for natives and tourists alike to maneuver through the area.
European settlers arrived in Melbourne in the mid 1800's and settled on the Yarra River. Prior to that the land was held mainly by the Kulins, a group of Australians that had lived in the area for 40,000 years. The Gold Rush in the 1850's brought in more settlers from around the world and thus began the building up of what is now Australia's second largest city.
The architecture in CBD Melbourne stands out due to its Victorian and contemporary mix. Flinders Street Station is a perfect example of Victorian construction with its elaborate facade of arches, domes, and clocks. The Arts Centre with its 162-meter (531 feet) spire is a very contemporary landmark.
Events take place year round in the CBD and include:
Summer - Boxing Day Test match, an Australian cricket match against a national team
Autumn - The Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, a 14 day culinary feast
Winter - Melbourne Day, an annual celebration to mark the founding of Melbourne
Spring - Around the Bay in a Day, a cycling event that attracts 16,000 plus people
Come take in all that CBD Melbourne has to offer!
